With a combined cost of $4.65 billion, ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC and ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA, LLC, are building world class, state-of- the-art steel and stainless steel greenfield processing facilities in northern Mobile County, Alabama. This project is a cooperative effort of ThyssenKrupp Steel Americas and ThyssenKrupp Stainless Global, both based in Duisburg, Germany.
The facilities will begin operation in 2010, and when fully operational, will create a combined 2,700 jobs. The new U.S. facilities will be a cornerstone of ThyssenKrupp’s NAFTA strategy and an integral part of its overall global market strategy.

Proposed Facility Layout
The facilities will manufacture and process carbon steel and stainless steel for high-value applications by manufacturers in the United States and throughout North America. The plants will serve industries including automotive, packaging, construction, electrical and utility, in addition to serving manufacturers of appliances, precision machinery and engineered products.
The carbon steel facility includes a hot strip mill which will be used primarily to process slabs from ThyssenKrupp’s new steel plant in Brazil. It also features cold rolling and hot-dip coating capacity for high-quality end products of flat carbon steel. The carbon steel facility will have an annual capacity of 4.1 million metric tons of end products.
The stainless steel facility will feature a melt shop with an annual capacity of up to one million metric tons of slabs, which also will be processed on the carbon steel hot strip mill. It will also feature a cold rolling facility, which will be designed initially to produce 350,000 tons of cold strip and 125,000 tons of pickled hot strip. In addition, the stainless facility will provide ThyssenKrupp Mexinox in San Luis Potosí in Mexico with its required pre-material (340,000 metric tons of hot band).
